1950s West German Black Glass Statement Collar Necklace
This extraordinary 1950s statement collar necklace has the bold scale and dramatic presence of runway jewelry. Although originally sold to us as French, we believe the necklace is more likely West German in origin based on its construction and, in particular, the distinctive chain style commonly seen in West German costume jewelry of the period.
The necklace is constructed with black glass beads individually framed by decorative filigree end caps. These elements are woven through a four-chain foundation, creating a dense, dimensional composition of black glass and warm gold-tone metal. The result is an almost textile-like effect, with the interwoven beads and chains giving the necklace wonderful texture and visual movement.
Substantial in both construction and appearance, the necklace weighs approximately 9 ounces and measures about 2 inches wide. At 15 inches in length, it sits close to the neckline, creating the dramatic collar effect that makes this piece particularly striking.
